ECOTOURISM
Isla Mujeres has several protected areas that are ideal for ecotourism outings and observing a wide array of
regional flora and fauna.
Garrafon National
Park. Located on the island?s southern end, 6 km (4 mi) from Isla Mujeres? downtown area, on Av. Rueda
Medina. Open daily from 8:00
to 5:00.
At this park you can go on photo safaris and observe diverse populations of
turtles and marine birds.
Isla Contoy.
To arrive at this island, which lies north of Isla Mujeres, you?ll need to take a 30-km (19 mi) boat ride.
This island is a natural sanctuary inhabited by hundreds of birds, including
such species as cranes, frigate birds and pelicans, among others. It is an ideal location for photo safaris.
Tortugranja. Located on Calle Zac Bajo, near Playa Paraiso. At this place you can see various
turtle species that inhabit the region, such as the giant sea turtle, which
arrives at the coast to lay its eggs from
May to September. The eggs are then
kept in a pen to protect them
from predators.
