The blend of
pre-Hispanic and Viceregal architecture, the folklore,
exquisite cuisine, the extraordinary natural environment and its vast cultural
offering make Oaxaca
one of the most beautiful cities in the country. Oaxaca has some
of the most
important museums in Mexico and such
spectacular churches as
Santo Domingo, where you?ll
see a gold-covered altar that will leave you
speechless. The arts and crafts
produced in Oaxaca are quite impressive
as well; you?ll find everything from alebrijes and black pottery
to glazed ceramics.
Puebla de Los Angeles,
once the religious capital of New Spain,
joins the list of colonial cities with Baroque
architecture and Talavera-ornamented facades and cupolas. The
town?s cathedral is one of
the oldest in the nation. Another
architectural treasure is the Palafoxiana
Library, which dates back to the 17th century
and houses 40,000 titles. The UNESCO declared Puebla a World Heritage Site due to
its rich and original cuisine.
Queretaro?s aqueduct,
which was built during the
18th century and spans 1,280
meters (4,224 feet),
has become an important city symbol, as it was
a key site during Mexico?s Independence movement and a decisive staging ground to organize the
fall of Maximillian
of Hapsburg?s empire. The plazas, as well as the Baroque
and Churrigueresque churches are truly amazing. One of
Queretaro?s most popular attractions is the Convento de la
Cruz, where you
can see a tree that has thorns that grow in the
form of crosses.
Among the
most emblematic sights in Tlacotalpan are the colorful pastel facades, red-tile roofs, the beautiful streets
and the city?s
exceptional design. This town, in the
state of Veracruz, is the capital of Jarocho music and dance. The Papaloapan River, which runs
past Tlacotalpan, is the annual
site for a boat procession in honor of the Virgen de la Candelaria.
Known as the
city with a face of stone
and heart of silver, Zacatecas is an early
mining city with winding roads
and many romantic spots. It lies at
the bottom of a canyon surrounded
by various hills, such as La
Bufa. Among its
spectacular religious and civic buildings
is the Cathedral,
a beautiful example of New Spain
Baroque architecture.
Considered the
