Following
a seven hour bus ride, leaving the Distrito Federal for the port of Veracruz, make your way to the Plaza de Armas
to find lodging in one of the hotels found there. Then go out to sightsee the city, visiting first the Museo
de la Ciudad (CityMuseum), where you can see a permanent exposition that tells
step by step the history of Veracruz. Then visit the Café de la Parroquia, the most
representative café of the port, and ask for a lechero con canillas (a type of coffee with
milk) accompanied by a plate of picadillas de chorizo
y huevo
(eggs and diced spicy sausage). After having breakfast, proceed with your tour
to the center, visiting the Mercado de Artesanías
(Handicraft Market) where you can buy seashell necklaces. Go towards the Edificio de Correos (PostOfficeBuilding), where you
can take a bus to the Fuerte (Fort) San Juan de Ulúa.Pick up a
brochure to learn more about its history, as well as the characters who were
imprisoned within its walls, including President Benito Juárez
and Chucho "El Roto." Upon
returning to the center, hail a taxi that will take you to the tranquil beaches of Mocambo,
just 8 km (5 mi) from the city of Veracruz, where you can enjoy the warm Veracruz climate.Afterwards, you can get a bite to eat at Boca del Río (Mouth of the
River), that is found just a few minutes away where they will prepare for you a
delicious filet stuffed with jaiba (crab) and rice a
la tumbada. When you return to the port, go to
the Acuario de Veracruz (Veracruz Aquarium), where
you can admire innumerable marine animals like sharks, sea turtles and manta
rays among others. End your day with a stroll along the Malecón
(Boardwalk) to the building Ayuntamiento, where you
can see couples of all ages dancing to the rythym of tradicionaldanzón, a spectacle that begins at seven in the evening.
Afterwards, look for a place to dine, and order an exquisite barbacoa de mariscos
(seafood barbecue wrapped inside a banana leaf), that will leave you completely
satisfied.
