WHERE TO GO AND WHAT TO DO?

Taxco

When you get to the "magical town" of Taxco de Alarcón, Guerrero, find lodging in one of the hotels located right in front of the Cathedral of Santa Prisca where you will have an exceptional view. Exiting the hotel, cross over to the Plaza Borda from where you can see the entirety of the exquisite Baroque façade of this stunning religious building. Take a few photos of the columns and the quarry stone sculptures that adorn the main façade, as well as the tiles in the main dome. Next, enter the church and discover the enormous artistic richness of the altarpieces, fresco paintings and an amazing wood covered in gold. Afterwards, go outside and stroll the cobblestone streets, photographing the colonial homes with their white walls and red tiled roofs. During your tour, check out the Museo de la Platería (Silver Museum) where you can see incredible objects created with this metal that has made the city famous. The collection includes earrings, necklaces, and bracelets among others. Then stop by the Parque Nacional Grutas de Cacahuamilpa (Cacahuamilpa Caverns Nacional Park), located 31 km (19 mi) northeast of Taxco.  Here you can explore 20 caverns whose insides have hundreds of calcified rocks of whimsical shapes and see the entrance of two caverns where the waters of the rivers San Jerónimo and Chontalcoatlán emerge. These are also excellent options if you are interested in spelunking. When you return to Taxco, look for a restaurant and savor one of the typical dishes of the state of Guerrero: a bowl of pozole (a broth-based hominy soup with pork or chicken and condiments) accompanied by a dark beer.  Finally, head towards the Mercado de Artesanías (Handicraft Market), situated behind the Cathedral. There you will find all types of silver pieces and jewelry to take home as gifts for your friends and family.
