WHERE TO GO AND WHAT TO DO?
Riviera Maya
In a taxi trip of just over 50 km (31 mi) from the International Airport of
Cancun, you can arrive at the Playa del Carmen, an incredible tourist
destination located in the heart of the Riviera Maya. Here the thermometer can
reach 35ºC (95ºF) and there are at least 20
major tourist hotels, among which are 8 resorts, equipped with luxurious rooms
and that offer diverse spa treatments to treat your body.
In this paradise destination of southeast Mexico, you can enjoy the sun and
turquoise blue waters of the Caribbean Sea while relaxing. Or you can
do various aquatic sports like windsurfing or the new extreme sport known as
kite surfing, which combines the skill of surfing with parachuting. During your visit to the Riviera Maya, do not miss a
submarine trip to explore the Gran Arrecife Maya
(Grand Mayan Reef), diving more than 10 meters (33 feet) among hundreds of multicolored fish and a wide range of coral reefs.
Upon returning to the surface, you can tackle the route of other tourist
attractions that are found in the area starting with the thematic park Xcaret
where, aside from admiring the turtles, monkeys, iguanas and tejones that
inhabit the space, you can practice snorkeling in the cove that gives the place
its name. As well, you can explore its archeological ruins which, together with
those of Cobá and Tulum,
are the main Mayan ceremonial centers that exist in the region. Finally, rent a horse and ride the beaches
off the Riviera. In Paamul you can taste
some scrumptious papadzules
(rolled tortillas with pumpkin seeds, epazote and egg), tostadas
de cochinita pibil (brittle
tortillas topped with spiced, shredded pork) and a mouth-watering fish filet to
restore your energy and that way, the next day, you can visit Xel-Há, Aktum Chen, and other
attractions.
