Monterrey, the most important
economic and industrial center in the northern region of the country, is a city
that has numerous tourist attractions awaiting you to discover. Following a two
hour flight from the Distrito Federal, make lodging arrangements in one of the
hotels situated to the side of the Macroplaza. Then
right away, go out and get to know the city. The first thing you will have
before your eyes will be the spectacular profile of the Cerro de la Silla (Saddle Hill, because the western profileof the mountain
resembles a saddle).
Boarda taxi and go towards the colony of La
Pastora, where you begin a hillside ascent of 2.5
km (1.6 mi) until you arrive at one
of its viewing points. Then make your way to the ecological park of Chipinque, located 8
km (5 mi) south of Monterrey,
where you can rent a mountain bike to admire the landscape, before hiking to
the waterfall called Cola de Caballo (Horse?s Tail),
an impressive waterfall 25 meters (82
feet) high.Continue your trip
towards the Cañón de PotreroChico, a canyon located 41 km (25 mi) northeast of Monterrey. There you will encounter the mouth of two canyons,
considered the highest in the northern part of the country, where you can glide
across a line suspended over the canyon . After
awhile, prepare yourself for a visit to the Grutas
(Caverns) of Bustamante, situated 105 km (65 mi) north of Monterrey, distinguished as the largest caverns in northern Mexico with depths of 225 meters (738 feet). To end the journey, look for a restaurant where you
can try the famous cabrito
(grilled goat), and the machaca
tacos (scrambled eggs with beef jerky). When you get back to your hotel, take a
shower and get ready to meet the nightlife of Monterrey: first, a visit to a site where you can listen to
typical Norteña music, and later, a rodeo where you
can face the challenge of taming a mechanical bull.
