Alter
arriving at the airport in the city of Guadalajara, one of the most important metropolises in the country, hail a taxi to take you to the historical center,
where you can rent a calandria
(a type of horse-drawn carriage) to tour each corner of the admired city. First
of all, visit the Teatro (Theater) Degollado, a spectacular Neoclassic
style building that has in its façade nine Corinthian columns engraved with the
images of Apollo and the nine muses. After that, go to the Instituto Cultural Cabañas (Cabañas Cultural Institute),
located in the Plaza Tapatía, that houses an
impressionable work of art done by the muralist painter José Clemente Orozco. The Palacio Municipal (City
Hall), in Neoclassic style, possesses the most
important collection of paintings by the artist Gabriel Flores. Later on, you
can admire the Gothic style Cathedral Metropolitana
where inside you will find nine alters and three Neoclassic
chapels. Finally, aquaint yourself
with the Rotonda de los JalisciensesIlustres, a circular monument containing 17 columns
and 98 urns of important military personnel of the state, like Ramón Corona.After this trip through some of the principal streets of the city,
head towards the neighboring town of Tequila, where they produce the famous
national drink of the same name. In this place, do not miss visiting some of its historical monuments
such as: the Templo de la Purísima (Church of the Purest) and the Quinta Sauza,
from which emerges one of the most famous brands of tequila in the world.
Finally, go to the MuseoNacional
del Tequila ? Munat (NacionalTequilaMuseum - Munat), inaugurated in
2000, which offers a photographic and plastic model about the history of this
beverage. Before returning to your hotel in Guadalajara, look for a place where
you can enjoy the famous tortasahogadas
(literally "drowning sandwiches") or a delicious Moctezuma
fish (a filet stuffed with shrimp), accompanied by a shot of mezcal (a
transparent drink made from distilling the agave plant), and later on, tequila.
