Arriving in the city of Chihuahua, prepare yourself
to undertake a journey of three days to one of the most beautiful national
parks in Mexico.
Make your way to the Chihuahua-Pacífico
train station, where you can board the famous CHEPE which, after a trip of
approximately 300
km (186 mi), will take you
to the Barrancas del Cobre(Copper Canyons). This incredible
system of six canyons is among the largest in the world with ravines 1,879 meters
(6,165
feet) deep and temperatures that can reach 40ºC (104ºF). When you arrive at Divisadero station, arrange your lodging and go on the tour
that will take you see three of its spectacular canyons: Barrancas del Cobre, Urique and Tararecua. During journey you will encounter groups of
indigenous Tarahumaras that offer their own handmade
crafts. This trip will lead you to the vantage point of PiedraVolada (Flying Stone), where you can appreciate the
whimsical forms of the rocks. The next day, travel to the town of Creel where you can rent a
bike and tackle the route along ArarekoLake
and the Valle de los Hongos (Valley of Mushrooms). There you can
admire the strange rock formations and the old Misión
de San Ignacio (Saint Ignatius Mission). Later, you will have the option of
taking helicopter ride ? an incredible experience that will allow you to view
the entire landscape while listening to the history of the canyons. If you get hungry, look for a restaurant where you can enjoy the
traditional discada.
This traditional meal of roasted beef, jalapeno peppers, chorizo (spicy
sausage), onion and bacon could accompany a bit of sotol (an alcoholic beverage of
the agave plant). Finally, to add a special touch to your visit, go to the ParqueNacionalCascada de Basaseachi (BasaseachiWaterfallNational Park),
where you will find Barranca de Candameña
(CandameñaCanyon).
There you can take part in the sport of paragliding. Take the leap from heights
of 884
meters (2,900 feet)
to feel the adrenaline overtake you while flying above the landscape of this
natural wonder!
