The most famous beverage in Mexico, Tequila, is a liquor
obtained from fermented agave
juice (a typical plant in the western part of the country). This was a well
known drink already in the prehispanic era. Recently,
the UNESCO appointed the Tequila region of Jalisco as
World Heritage.
Tequila is one of the most ancient beverages in Mexico and by far the most emblematic one of all beverages
produced in the country. Its piquant savor, achieved by distilling the blue agave, is
nowadays one of the most demanded drinks both in the international market, as
well as in local family get-togethers and business meetings.
During the past years the Tequila industry has grown considerably thanks
to its spreading popularity both in Mexico and abroad. Thousands of bottles are exported every
year to countries like France, United States and Spain and it is very easy these days to find hundreds of
brands which take their pride from the genuine taste of the traditional
Tequila. It is also worth mentioning that there are Tequilas with fruit flavors
and spices, as well as the famous tequila creams.
In July 2006 the UNESCO ordained that the places in the state of Jalisco, where the millennial agave is cultivated, were to be declared as World Heritage. It has been
recognized that only the beverage elaborated in this very region is the true
tequila. Thus it was granted with the denomination of origin, which certifies
its authenticity.
