One of the most touristy routes in Mexico, "Misiones de la Sierra Gorda", is a great tour that offers and excellent panorama
to the Mexican baroque from the 17th and 18th centuries.
This route was declared as World Heritage by the UNESCO in 2003.
The Sierra Gorda in Queretaro, which was declared as Biosphere Reserve in 1997,
embodies perhaps the best testimony of the baroque art of the colonial era.
There are five Franciscan convents which were built by Fray Junipero
Serra in the 18th century, the same ones
that constitute one of the touristiest routs in Mexico.
These convents, known by the names San Miguel Concá,
Santiago Jalpan, La Purísima
Concepción de Landa, Nuestra Señora de la Luz de Tancoyol and San Francisco Tilazo,
hold a great artistic value thanks to the singular combination of images that
decorate each one of their façades. The images portray well the ingenuousness
and coloring which were typical in the aesthetics of the Pame
and Chichineca people; the indigenous people who
participated in designing the constructions.
These ancient evangelization centers were declared as World Heritage in
2003 and today they constitute one of the most visited tourist destinations in Mexico. They are an ideal place for the lovers of out-door
sports since in their surroundings it is possible to practice mountain biking,
trekking and other adventure sports.
