More than 1000m under the surface of the Caribbean Sea, the diving lovers can discover the Great Mayan Reef, one of the
largest reefs in the world. It extends up to 300 km, including only the Mexican
part of it!
The water in the Caribbean is so transparent that it allows the rays of
light to penetrate its delicate surface directly. This enhances the growth of
corals which little by little become the home of hundreds of different marine
species; a true pleasure for the divers, who in this grand reef can find the
most surprising organisms of the submarine world.
The Great Mayan Reef begins in Cabo Catoche, in the northern part of the
state of Quintana Roo, and goes along the coasts of Belize, Guatemala and Honduras. Its size is remarkable, for in the Mexican part
alone the reef extends up to 300 km and in total it covers a length of more
than 1000 km.
Also known as the Mesoamerican Reef, the Great Mayan Reef is not only a
spectacular aquatic garden where over seventy marine species coexist. It also
works as a barrier for the succession of waves provoked by storms and
hurricanes. In the mainland this favors the development of plants, dunes and
woods which, like in the case of Island Cozumel, provide the visitors with
other options of leisure. Take your diving equipment with you and enjoy the
marvelous paradise under the deep sea!
