One of the most imposing architectural master pieces in the country
which is also the principal symbol of Querétaro, the
Colonial Aqueduct, was built in the early 18th century. During many
years it worked as the main water distributor for this city, which stands out
amongst the most important cities in the central Mexico.
The Aqueduct?s monumental silhouette is surely the most unforgettable
image Querétato can offer to its visitors. Its fame
derives from the early 19th century, when it was used as a secret
meeting point to develop a conspiracy that would eventually lead Mexico to its independence.
The construction of this giant was initiated in 1726 by the marquis of
la Villa del Villar del Águila who, after hearing
the petition of the Capuchin Sisters, decided to carry out the project. It was
concluded 12 years later, in 1738. Soon after, the aqueduct became the
principal distributor of water for the city, transporting this vital liquid all
the way from the spring of La Cañada -located in the
periphery of Querétaro- to the very heart of the city. It consists of 74 stone arches (the highest
one reaching up to 23 m) and its length is 1.2 km, going from west to east.
Nowadays this colonial pearl is completely trapped by the city which is
constantly expanding and finding new foothold. However, its importance as a
historical and cultural symbol for the capital city, Querétaro,
continues to exist.
