The biggest stadium in Mexico, the "Azteca", which is in
the capital city, is one of the international forums with the greatest capacity
for public in the world. Many sport events, artistic spectacles and even
religious events have taken place there ever since it was built.
The Azteca stadium, the biggest sport field in
the country, is one of the most important architectural constructions of modern
Mexico. It was designed by a prestigious Mexican architect,
Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, and
it takes up a space of 60,000 m². More than 100,000 tons of concrete were used
in order to complete the construction and it has a capacity of 100,000
spectators. The stadium is equipped with the newest technological advances,
including two huge screens, both 16 m long.
Since its inauguration in 1966, "el Azteca"
has been the cathedral of soccer in Mexico and the scene for various local tournaments; it
harbored the soccer finals in the Olympic Games in 1968 and both the
inauguration and closure of the world cups, in 1970 and 1986 respectively.
This spectacular arena has also witnessed American football matches,
boxing matches and various political and religious events amongst which the
Pope John Paul?s masses stand out. During these past years "el Azteca" has also been the scene for many world-class
concerts, given by artists like Elton John, Michael Jackson, Gloria Estefan, Lenny Kravitz, Luis
Miguel and U2.
