Las Barrancas del Cobre (the Copper Canyon) are an impressive system of canyons, located in the state of Chihuahua. They provide the visitors with all kinds of adventures, from extreme sports to an encounter with the inheritors of the ancestral Tarahumara culture.

The old inhabitants of these lands used to say that the canyons came about when the world had barely been created; when the rocks had not yet settled. It is true that this spectacular landscape was formed over 20 million years ago, because of the constant movement of the tectonic plates which, over time, gave shape to the Western Sierra Madre.

Ordained as a national park in the late 1980?s, the Copper Canyon include 60,000 km², governed by canyons and passes which are ideal for trekking, climbing and other adventure sports. There is also a labyrinth of rivers; altogether about 16,000 kilometers of them, where visitors keen on white water rafting can set out on an exciting trip to the challenging streams and whirlpools. At the same time, the incredible landscapes full of pine trees, oaks and waterfalls will nurture the visitor?s eyes. Another way to get to know these canyons and their current dwellers, the indigenous Rarámuri people, is by getting on the Chihuahua-Pacífico train (also known as CHEPE), which connects Los Mochis, Sinaloa with the city of Chihuahua, going through various villages which exist in the very heart of the canyons.
