HISTORICAL ARCHITECTURE

The civic and religious buildings of Aguascalientes speak volumes about the city?s rich history, as you?ll see in the haciendas and other architectural gems.

Palacio de Gobierno ? Located on the corner of Juan de Montoso and Blvd. Jose Maria Chavez, facing Plaza Patria. This is the only remaining 17th-century civic building. The most striking features of this edifice?s fabulous façade are the red basalt walls, the balconies and the pink stone coat of arms. The two patios, which have 111 arches, feature murals by Chilean artist Oswaldo Barra Cunningham, which chronicle the city?s history. Open daily from 9:00 to 8:00.

Plaza de la Patria ? This is the main plaza located in the city center. In the middle of the square you?ll see a column with an eagle devouring a snake, which is a replica of a national symbol created by sculptor Jesus F. Contreras.

Catedral Basilica de Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion ? Located on the corner of 5 de Mayo and Francisco I. Madero, in front of the Plaza de la Patria. This cathedral, dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption of Aguas Calientes, was built on land where a chapel once stood in 1575. The Cathedral is of Salomonic baroque style and the interior has detailed neoclassical ornamentation. Open daily from 7:00 to 1:00 and 5:00 to 9:00.

Templo de San Antonio ? Located at the corner of Pedro Parga and Ignacio Zaragoza. This eclectic façade was built with pink, green and yellow stone. The main body has an octagonal form and three arches on the first floor, as well as bosses and columns. The interior features abundant eclectic ornamentation with diverse neoclassical details. Open daily from 7:00 to 1:00 and 5:00 to 9:00.

Jardin de San Marcos ? Located on Av. Manuel M. Ponce. This splendid garden has a stone balustrade with four aches facing the cardinal points and beautiful neoclassical ridges in the form of urns. Open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Ex-Hacienda de Ojo Caliente ? Located at the corner of Blvd. San Luis Potosi and Av. Lopez Mateos. Built in an ideal location due to the nearby thermal waters. The forged steel balconies are framed in stone and the chapel has a neoclassical entryway.
