HISTORICAL ARCHITECTURE
In Tlaxcala and its surrounding areas you?ll find numerous
architectural treasures with astonishing facades and arty interiors.
Palacio del Gobierno (Government Palace). Located at
3 Plaza de la Constitucion, this building stands out
for its Plateresque façade, its arches made with
stone carvings and its balcony ornamented with baroque-style plaster. Inside
are a series of murals painted by Tlaxcalan artist Desiderio Hernandez Xochitiotzin.
Open daily from 9:00 to 5:00.
Catedral de Nuestra
Señora de la Asuncion (Cathedral). Located
on the Calzada de San Francisco. This is an impressive religious
construction with a renaissance-style façade and a mudejar-style
wood ceiling. The cathedral has a beautiful baroque-style main altar that dates
back to the 17th century. The altar has nine quilted sculptures and
nine oil paintings. Open daily from 6:30 am to 7:00 pm.
Basilica de Ocotlan.
Located on the Calzada de los
Misterios in the Ocotlan
neighborhood. This basilica was built using an eclectic design, blending local
baroque styles. The temple stands out for its baroque-style pedestal. Inside
you?ll see a series of baroque altarpieces in honor of the Virgin Mary. Open daily from 9:00 to 5:00.
