HISTORICAL
ARCHITECTURE
In Saltillo you?ll see
many examples of eclectic architecture as you marvel at the monuments and main
buildings.
Catedral de Santiago (Santiago
Cathedral)
? Located on the corner of Hidalgo and Juarez. This is one of the city?s best examples of religious
architecture. The stone façade features three bodies flanked by columns of Solomonic baroque and Churrigueresque
styles, as well as elaborate pilasters with inverted and truncated pyramids.
The interior houses a beautiful altarpiece covered with silver and a pulpit
decorated with plant motifs. Open daily from 9:00 to 12:00 and 3:30 to 5:30.
Templo de San Esteban (San Esteban Church) ? Located on Guadalupe Victoria Street. This 16th-century
construction has a sober façade with an arched entryway and a window with stone
molding. Also of interest is the tower, which has a dome covered with tiles.
Open daily from 9:00 to 7:00.
Casa
Purcell
? Located near the corner of Hidalgo
and Aldama. This English-style construction currently
houses the Vanguardia
Cultural Center.
Open daily from 10:00 to 6:00.
Casino de Saltillo ? Located on Hidalgo
Street. The façade of this neoclassical-style
edifice features arches, windows and Ionic-style columns. The interior houses furnishings reminiscent of
the Belle Epoque, recreating the elegant and
sophisticated atmosphere that Saltillo?s
high society enjoyed at the end of the 19th century. Open daily from
10:00 to 8:00.
