At the archaeological zones in Puebla?s surrounding areas, you can learn about the
splendor of Mexico?s pre-classic
era. As you visit the ruins of
this great civilization, the view of the
nearby Malinche Volcano will leave
you fascinated.
Cholula Archaeological Zone
? Located 8 km
(5 mi)
from Puebla,
along the so-called Quetzalcoatl route. Known as the oldest city in the Americas, this
site has seven superimposed pyramids. One of the
most impressive structures is the
pyramid that was built to
honor Chiconahui Quiahuitl,
which has a 400-meter (1,320-foot)
base, making it the largest foundation
in the world. At the site?s
museum you?ll see replicas of the so-called butterfly
wall and wall of drinkers,
as well as a model of the pyramid
group. Open daily from 10:00 to 4:30.
Cantona
? Located 92 km
(57 mi)
northwest of Puebla,
off Highway 129 in
the direction of Libres. This archaeological
site, which is 12 square kilometers,
is one of
the largest pre-Hispanic cities
in Mesoamerica. It is divided into
three urban units, where you?ll
find the Acropolis, which has more than 3,000 individual patios and
24 ball courts, among other structures.
