In Patzcuaro
you can try exquisite dishes, some of which are of pre-Hispanic origin, such as
whitefish, Tarascan tamales, blackberry tamales and
the so-called tamales de ceniza, or tlaconextamalli, which are cooked in hot ashes. You also
can order the traditional corundas (triangular-shaped
tamales), uchepos (sweet corn tamales) and sopa de tarasca (a creamy bean
soup with spices), to mention just a few of Michoacan?s
most famous dishes. As for beverages, you can indulge in sweet or spicy atoles (cornmeal drinks), which are often prepared with
tamarind, brown sugar and chile. In addition, you can
have a glass of white atole accompanied with sweet
bread made with brown sugar and mezcal. Finally,
don?t forget to try Patzcuaro?s traditional ice cream,
called nieve de pasta, as well as the famous buñuelos (fritters).
