FESTIVALS AND TRADITIONS

In Patzcuaro you?ll see numerous festivities that are mostly of a religious nature, such as Day of the Dead, which is held on Nov. 1 and 2. During this celebration locals pay respects to the deceased by decorating gravesites and altars with marigold flowers and candles; they also leave offerings of food. You?ll see these altars and offerings at the Casa de los Once Patios and at various houses throughout the city. In addition, the Basilica de la Salud offers a concert, and in the main square you can visit a crafts market. During this celebration, at Lake Patzcuaro small boats decorated with flowers and candles make their way to the nearby island of Janitzio. It is one of the most beautiful and famous celebrations in the region.
