Near Patzcuaro you?ll find a nature area that is the nesting grounds of indigenous and migratory bird species.

Lake Patzcuaro. Located 5 km (3 mi) north of Patzcuaro. This lake covers an area of 130 sq. kilometers and it is fed by underground springs. The lake has nine islands, including Janitzio, Jaracuaro, Pacanda, Tecuena, Urandenes, Yunuen and Copujo. At this lake you can observe resident bird species, such as doves, hummingbirds the black-bellied whistling-duck and hawks. In the winter you?ll see various migratory birds, including the green-winged teal and the northern pintail.
