ARCHAEOLOGY
In Patzcuaro?s
surrounding areas you can visit two interesting archaeological zones that will
allow you to learn about the region?s glorious past.
Tzintzuntzan. Located
15 km (9 mi) northeast of Patzcuaro, off Highway 120 in the direction of Quiroga. The structures at these ruins, perched atop
enormous rectangular platforms facing the lake, have become important symbols
of Purepecha urban architecture. On the platforms lie
five pyramids, which house temples dedicated to the gods. Open daily from 10:00
to 5:00.
Ihuatzio. Located
15 km (9 mi) northwest of Patzcuaro, off Highway 120 in the direction of Quiroga. This is one of the region?s most important
archaeological zones due to the historical relevance of the Tarascan

pyramids, known as yacatas, which were built on a
huge rectangular platform. Open daily from 10:00 to 5:00.
