ARCHITECTURE
In Monterrey you can admire buildings and
museums of modern architecture, which over the years have come to identify this
vigorous industrial city.
Museo de
Arte Contemporaneo (Contemporary Art Museum,
or MARCO)
? Located between Zuazua and Padre Raymundo Jardon streets, in the Colonia Centro. Architect Ricardo Legoretta designed this modern edifice.
At the entrance you can admire a
bronze sculpture known as La Paloma, the work of Juan Soriano and an important symbol of the museum.
Teatro de la Ciudad. Located in front of the Macro Plaza. The design of this
theater received honorable mention at the First Biennial of Mexican
Architecture in 1988. The two-tiered theater holds 1,500 spectators. There?s
also a smaller theater for experimental performances, as well as two open-air
theaters and rehearsal rooms.
Faro del Comercio. Located on Zaragoza Street.
The work of Luis Barragan, this is one of Monterrey?s most
characteristic contemporary monuments. The so-called Lighthouse of Commerce
stands 70 meters
(231 feet)
tall.
Centro Cultural Alfa. Located at 1000 Roberto
Garza Sada. This cultural center is a rotund inclined
building that houses the Museum
of Science and Technology
and a planetarium. Open Tuesday through Sunday from 3:00 to 9:30.
