CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE

In Monterrey you can admire buildings and museums of modern architecture, which over the years have come to identify this vigorous industrial city.

Museo de Arte Contemporaneo (Contemporary Art Museum, or MARCO) ? Located between Zuazua and Padre Raymundo Jardon streets, in the Colonia Centro. Architect Ricardo Legoretta designed this modern edifice.

At the entrance you can admire a bronze sculpture known as La Paloma, the work of Juan Soriano and an important symbol of the museum.

Teatro de la Ciudad. Located in front of the Macro Plaza. The design of this theater received honorable mention at the First Biennial of Mexican Architecture in 1988. The two-tiered theater holds 1,500 spectators. There?s also a smaller theater for experimental performances, as well as two open-air theaters and rehearsal rooms.

Faro del Comercio. Located on Zaragoza Street. The work of Luis Barragan, this is one of Monterrey?s most characteristic contemporary monuments. The so-called Lighthouse of Commerce stands 70 meters (231 feet) tall.

Centro Cultural Alfa. Located at 1000 Roberto Garza Sada. This cultural center is a rotund inclined building that houses the Museum of Science and Technology and a planetarium. Open Tuesday through Sunday from 3:00 to 9:30.
