Morelia is a city full of history and tradition, which is why it has so many diverse museums where you can learn new and fascinating things about Mexico.

 

Museo del Estado ? Located at 176 Guillermo Prieto Street in the Historic Center. This museum has three sections: archaeology, history and ethnology. In this 18th-century building you can also learn about the history of the state and its surrounding areas. Open Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 2:00 and 4:00 to 8:00, and Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 9:00 to 2:00 and 4:00 to 6:00.

 

Casa Museo Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon ? Located at 23 Avenida Morelos, at Soto Saldana, in the Historic Center. This Baroque-style mansion was built in 1758 and acquired by independence hero Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon in 1801. Currently, the museum houses paintings, photographs, furniture and other antique objects, as well as documents that reveal information about the life of Morelos. It also has an incomplete military uniform worn by Morelos during the independence movement. Open daily from 9:00 to 7:00.

 

Casa Natal de Morelos ? Located at 113 Corregidora Street, at Garcia Obeso, in the Historic Center. This house was the birthplace of Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon, known as the servant of the nation. Currently, the building is used as a cultural center, where personal objects and documents of Morelos are on display. You?ll also find paintings and can browse through a book collection. Open Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 8:00, and Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 to 7:00.

 

Museo de Arte Colonial (Museum of Colonial Art) ? Located at 240 Benito Juarez Street in the Historic Center. At this place you can explore Morelia?s colonial world in a museum that exhibits diverse works, including a collection of Christ figures made in various eras. Open Monday through Friday from 10:00 to 2:00, and Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 10:00 to 2:00 and 4:30 to 7:00.

 

Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Alfredo Zalce (Contemporary Art Museum) ? Located at 18 Avenida Acueducto, Bosque Cuauhtemoc, in the Historic Center. In this museum you?ll find a 20th-century collection of such artists as Jose Clemente Orozco, Manuel Perez Coronado and Alfredo Zalce. Open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 2:00 and 4:00 to 8:00.

 

Museo de la Mascara (Mask Museum) ? Located at 485 Avenida Morelos in the Historic Center. You?ll find this museum in the Casa de las Artesanias de Morelia. On display are 167 masks from various states. Admission is free. Open daily from 10:00 to 2:00 and 4:30 and 8:00.

 

Museo del Dulce (Candy Museum) ? Located at 440 Avenida Madero Oriente in the Historic Center. This Baroque-style building was acquired by Isidro Huarte in 1772 and currently is a candy museum. Inside you?ll find a collection of regional sweets. Open daily from 10:00 to 2:30 and 4:30 to 8:00.
