The beaches near Merida offer calm waters with winds reaching up to 40 knots, allowing you to do such water sports as windsurfing and kitesurfing. The latter is a more modern and extreme version of parasailing. The following beach offers rental services and classes for beginners:

 

Puerto Progreso ? Located 36 km (22 mi) north of Merida on Highway 261, this is the coast of Yucatan?s most important port. The climate is hot and arid with rainfall from June to September. The gentle surf at this beach is unbeatable for doing water sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing.
