A surreal world in the Huasteca of San Luis
Potosi! In Xilitla, in the state of San Luis Potosi, you can find a fantastic
place that was created by an English artist called Edward James, full of
incredible creatures surrounded by waterfalls and exuberant vegetation.
In San Luis Potosí,
48 km to
noth-east from Tamazunchale,
you will find Xilitla: a village surrounded by
forests and waterfalls and in whose vicinity still stand the ruins of an old
convent built in the 16th century. In this very convent, these days
dwell the curious and fantastic creatures that were created in the early 20th
century by the English artist Edward James.
In this place, baptized as "Las Pozas", James
built a series of concrete structures which blend in perfectly with the
vegetation and have the most peculiar forms one can imagine: gigantic hands and
spiral staircases that end nowhere; stretched arches that together resemble a
whale?s ribs, enormous flowers, honeycombs already half-devoured by the
vegetation and paths with steps that cross each other in all directions.
Nowadays "Las Pozas" functions as a natural
health resort and spa, housing its visitors in the lodge "El Castillo", which
used to be the house of the artist himself.
Built with the same fashion as the sculptural space, this hotel also has
a rather surreal structure; it is a mixture of the gothic, Moorish and English
styles.
