The beautiful
landscape, excellent climate and diverse
geographic zones surrounding Guanajuato provide the ideal setting for extreme sports. At the following
places you can enjoy beautiful views while mountain biking, paragliding, or aboard a hot air balloon:
Cerro del Cubilete ? Located
about 40 km (25 mi) from Guanajuato, this is the perfect
spot for paragliding, as the hills serve
as excellent platforms to take off.
As you glide through the air
you?ll get an impressive view
of the Bajio
region.
Zona Recreativa de las
Palomas ? Located 15 minutes from
Guanajuato off Highway 110
in the direction of Dolores Hidalgo, in the Cuenca
de la Esperanza. This recreational
area is part
of the migration
path of neotropical
birds from Alaska, Canada and the
United States. The rugged geography
that forms part of this
nature reserve?s ecosystem,
as well as the routes and trails
on the recreational
area?s grounds, allow you to
go mountain biking near some
of Guanajuato?s most famous mines, such as La Valencia,
the Mina de Guadalupe and
Real de Santa Ana.
Valle de Santiago ? Located
88 km (54 mi) from
Guanajuato off highways 110
and 45. This protected ecological zone has a group of volcanic craters.
It has varying climates, which have allowed the
development of diverse forms of
wildlife. The rough terrain of
this valley region, which includes
volcanic rock formations,
are a joy to explore along the area?s
intricate mountain bike routes.
Leon
? Located 54 km (33 mi) west of Guanajuato on Highway 45. This city hosts
the National Hot Air Balloon Festival. Here they also
organize hot air balloon rides for
groups of up to 12 people. During
the ride you?ll get a gorgeous
view of the
city and its surrounding areas.
