HISTORICAL ARCHITECTURE

 

The city of Durango has preserved interesting edifices that were built using various architectural styles from the 18th to 20th centuries.

 

Palacio de Gobierno ? Located on 5 de Febrero, this edifice has a sober baroque façade. Inside you?ll see several patios surrounded by beautiful balconies and a series of arches. The interior also houses murals by Francisco Montoya de la Cruz. Open daily from 9:00 to 6:00.

 

Casa de Gobierno ? Located at 143 Bruno Martinez Street. This magnificent building, which is currently the state governor?s office, features architectural elements from the 18th and 19th centuries. It also has an on-site museum with the edifice?s original furnishings on display. Open Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 2:00 and 5:00 to 8:00, and Saturdays from 9:00 to 2:00.

 

Casa del Conde del Valle de Suchil ? Located between the streets of Francisco I. Madero and 5 de Febrero. This is considered an important example of 18th-century colonial architecture. It features a façade with two bodies and baroque-style pilasters with plant motifs. Open Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 5:00.

 

Universidad Juarez de Durango ? Located on Av. Constitucion. This building, built in the Antiguo Colegio de la Compañia de Jesus, has two 18th-century baroque-style bodies. In the main patio you?ll see a garden surrounded by a series of arches and semi-circular columns. Open daily from 8:00 to 7:00.

 

Catedral Basilica Menor ? Located on Av. 20 de Noviembre. This cathedral, built with 16th-century baroque elements, has majestic towers. Inside you?ll see Byzantine-style ornamentation, which was added in the 20th century. Among some of the more notable features are the colonial-style paintings and sculptures, a stone staircase with gorgeous ironwork and the choir stalls. Open daily from 8:00 to 7:00.

 

Parroquia de Santa Ana ? Located on Av. Constitucion. This 18th-century parish church stands out for its lateral baroque-style facades and its ornamented columns. Open daily from 8:00 to 7:00.

 

Templo de San Agustin ? Located between Av. 20 de Noviembre and Hidalgo Street. This church has a neogothic-style façade and columns with simple adornments. At the main altar you?ll see precious images of saints and virgins. Open daily from 8:00 to 7:00.
