ECOTOURISM
In Chichen Itza?s environs there are various nature reserves that are
ideal for observing flora and fauna. In these areas you can explore sinkholes
and their underground streams and rivers, some of which are hidden in magical
and beautiful caverns.
Cenote Dzitnup ? Located 50 km (31 mi) from Chichen Itza and
about 7 km
(4 mi)
southeast of the city of Valladolid,
this sinkhole is inside an underground cavern that has curious rock formations
and dozens of stalactites. Here you?ll also find turquoise-blue waters
illuminated by sunlight that enters through a hole in the cavern?s ceiling.
Open daily from 7:00 to 5:00.
Cenote Zaci ? Located 40 km (25 mi) east of Chichen Itza
off Highway 180, near the main square in Valladolid.
This is one of the largest and most impressive open-air sinkholes on the Yucatan Peninsula. The sinkhole, which measures 28 meters (92 feet) in diameter, has
been converted into a rustic swimming pool. Open daily from 8:00 to 7:00.
