The train ride ends in Mazatlán, a land of good seafood, golden beaches and one of the best conserved historical centers in the country.

Destinations that make up the route

CHIHUAHUA

CREEL

This is a city of quarry stone and clear skies. It is not strange to run into Rarámuri people on the streets, who descend from the Tarahumara Mountains to do their shopping or offer their handcrafts. It is difficult to ignore the meat cuts, the cold beer and other amenities from northern Mexico. Exploring mansions from the times of the Mexican Revolution, the cathedral, and Pancho Villa’s grave make this destination an interesting lesson in history. This is where the Chihuahua-Pacífico train route begins, which crosses the dramatic Barrancas del Cobre (Copper Canyon). At the Naica mine, you can see the largest cave with crystals in the world, known as Cueva de las Espadas (Cave of the Swords).

This logging town is considered the entrance to the vast Tarahumara Mountains and also a Pueblo Mágico. Groups of travelers interested in extreme sports tend to start their journeys here. There are those who would rather enjoy the tranquility of its two churches, of Arareco Lake, De los Hongos Valley, the Cusárare waterfall or the Jesuit San Ignacio mission, with its magnificent collection of Colonial art. It is a great place to celebrate the Bicentenary and feel proud of being Mexican, in addition to experiencing something close to esoteric.

BARRANCAS DEL COBRE

BAHUICHIVO / CEROCAHUI

The group of six canyons in the Tarahumara Mountains is more extensive and deep than the Colorado Canyon; it is an impressive site, not only because of the enormous landscape, but also because of the ethnic richness of the locals: the Tarahumara people. Something quite enjoyable is a have a conversation with someone of the place and, naturally, setting out on the Chepe train ride, which travels from Chihuahua’s capital to Los Mochis, in Sinaloa. Barrancas del Cobre (Copper Canyon) represent a paradise for lovers of nature and adventure sports.

If you travel on the Chepe train, you must get down at the Bahuichivo station to reach Cerocahui, a little town surrounded by waterfalls and beautiful valleys. This is the starting point for exploring Urique Canyon, nearly two thousand meters deep. You must visit the San Javier mission, the waterfall by the same name, and the shelter for Rarámuri girls. Twenty five kilometers away is Del Gallego Mountain, where the viewpoint offers one of the most spectacular sights in the Tarahumara Mountains. This place is ideal for those interested in ecotourism.

EL FUERTE

LOS MOCHIS

Another one of the acclaimed destinations on the Chepe route, this is a Colonial town that served as an important mining center during the 19th Century. It is worth discovering its large mansions, currently turned into gorgeous hotels. The central plaza and its cathedral present a beautiful image, along with lush vegetation. You cannot miss a boat ride along the El Fuerte river and listening to stories related to El Zorro, who was originally from this Pueblo Mágico.

This modern city ends (or begins, depending on your point of view) the Chepe tour. This destination, of agricultural and industrial tradition, is famous for its seafood. A visit to the Topolobampo bay is worth it, as well as taking a yacht trip to observe dolphin families. Ships to La Paz, Baja California, sail from this port.

States that make up

Guanajuato

The state of Guanajuato has it all: the city of León, which is prolific, Guanajuato of European influences, and San Miguel de Allende with its bohemian allure. Smaller, although equally beautiful, are Celaya with its cajeta (milk caramel) and Irapuato with its strawberries. All these cities are semi-hidden among plains, mountains and abrupt hills. Each one, in its own way, contributes to forming a diverse state, rich in culture, with flavours and a past like few others.

States

Aguascalientes

The National San Marcos Fair placed this city on the global map, although for local tourism, Aguascalientes is an accessible destination, a great host that receives guests in a capital which stands out because of its cultural life and order. Its Colonial past is unveiled in every corner, but it is enough to move a little away from the center to discover archaeological sites like El Ocote; the Fría Mountains for camping and fishing aficionados; the dam; or Real de Asientos, its Pueblo Mágico.

States

Zacatecas

Images of desert landscapes, silver mines (which are today night clubs), Baroque churches and natural reserves could all belong to different spots on the planet. However, all these have a land in common: Zacatecas. Thanks to the mining wealth, this central state had a very important role during the Colony and much later, during the Revolution. Today, there are still traces of this in buildings, monuments, and even in museums: pieces of history that have nothing boring about them.

States

Jalisco

The land of tequila, charros and mariachi is much more than traditions. With Guadalajara as a leader in art, culture and gastronomy, the traveler has much to explore and visit in Jalisco; like staying in one of the most chic haciendas or country homes in Mexico, playing golf with a view of the sea in Puerto Vallarta, practicing extreme sports on the mountain, or visiting the Tequila route (the traditional or other more alternative ones thanks to boutique tequila houses).
