Located in the state of Nayarit, the Riviera Nayarit consists of 200 miles of Pacific coastline set against a lush backdrop of emerald mountains. Puerto Vallarta International Airport is 15 minutes from the Riviera Nayarit (45 minutes to Punta Mita), with direct flights to the U.S. and Canada with Delta Airlines, American Airlines, and Continental Airlines. The National Airport of Tepic, Nayarit’s capital, has direct flights to Mexico City.

Indulge Yourself in Punta Mita

Once a sacred Indian meeting site, the exclusive Punta Mita is destined to become Mexico's leading luxury enclave. Past La Cruz de Huanacaxtle (a small fishing village with pier and fine beaches) and Destiladeras beach is the easy-to-miss entrance to the ultra-upscale Punta Mita development. It straddles the Pacific Ocean and Banderas Bay, with rocky coves and gorgeous sandy beaches along the Pacific side (unfortunately, closed to the public). Where Peace Rules

The charm of this coastal town circles around the natural attractions, the hospitality of its people and their efforts to conserve the natural environment. The beach of Chacala is the perfect destination for those looking to get away from the noise, pollution and crowds. At Chacala, visitors will find plenty of peacefulness. Its fine golden sand, the calm waters and the abundant vegetation, which includes palm, mahogany and fruit trees, make it one of the most beautiful destinations in Nayarit's coast. Visitors come here to relax, swim, snorkel and enjoy the landscape. Those exploring the jungle will be able to see beavers, badgers, armadillos, ocelots, tropical birds and other wild animal species.

Colorful Riviera Nayarit

Craftsmanship that can be found in Riviera Nayarit is elaborated by Huichol and Coras who dwell in the Sierra Madre Occidental. Beautiful figures representing the gods, of the sun, rain, and others, are common from the zone. These ethnic groups are distinguished by their colorful clothing, embroidered manta garments, hats crowned with feathers, as well as wrist bands, rings and collars of crystal beads in which they express their beliefs. Riviera Nayarit has a great quantity of places in which either beginners as well as experts can practice surf. In addition to its beaches and bays, there is a wide variety of theme parks in the Riviera, among which, one of the most popular is Aquaventuras. The place has green areas, slides, shows featuring dolphins and sea lions, as well as special programs where visitors are able to interact with them. Besides swimming with dolphins, you can go snorkeling and even practice aquatic aerobics and other stunts with them.

The exotic taste of Nayarit

Flavors from the sea make a delicious mix with exotic fruits and species of the Nayarita land. Nayarit possesses a privileged geographic location, which leads to an excellent weather with abundant rains during summer and very fertile lands that produce a great variety of beautiful flowers and flavorful fruits that increase the variety of its recipes. At the Nayarit Riviera, visitors will find exquisite oyster sopes (fried gorditas with different toppings) and enchiladas, shrimp tamales, grilled fish, which is one of the delicious specialties within the region, as well as the Tlaxtihuilli (shrimp soup), aguachile (seafood served with a spicy lemon mix), fish rinds, the famous gray mullet grilled on mangrove wood, among other delicacies.

Sun, Sea and Adrenaline!

Bucerias is a charming town where Mexican Style meets with the golden sand of the Pacific Ocean. The coastal village of Bucerias (population 6,500) is located about 5 km up the coast from Nuevo Vallarta. The main draw is the town's sandy beach, lined with seafood restaurants, simple beach clubs/bars, and homes owned by the area's transplanted Americans and Canadians. At the Nayarit Rivera beaches, kissed by the Ocean Pacific waters, visitors will find the perfect place for water activities, such as surfing, fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, jet skiing or swimming. If you do not want to get wet, then relaxing under the shade of a palm shelter (while enjoying a refreshing drink) is also an excellent option.

Wild Wild Riviera Nayarit

Would you like enjoy an adventure between mangroves, crocodiles and exotic birds? The Tovara lets you do just that. A few feet from San Blas Port, visitors will find the El Conchal pier, where a boat tour departs to go deep into the La Tovara ecological preserve, a true biodiversity sanctuary. This tour moves along beautiful natural canals that flow into Matanchen's bay, in the Pacific Ocean, which stand out for being the spot where the wetland's fresh water mixes with the ocean's salt water. It is a unique opportunity to admire many plant and animal species. The canals, outlined by lianas, ferns and orchids, are home to crocodiles, turtles, fish and a great variety of bird species.

Experience Nature in San Blas

The port of San Blas is one of the tourist icons of the Mexican Pacific thanks to its profusion of natural beauty, gourmet delights and historical significance. San Blas is about a four-hour drive north of Puerto Vallarta. Known for its pristine beaches, the town has a population of about 10 thousand people. The surfers consider this a hotspot, but visitors will only find peace and quiet... and maybe a couple of restaurants serving fine seafood. Bird watchers look no further. San Blas is a tropical paradise for birds and their watchers. Covered with mangrove swamps, estuaries, lagoons and beaches, this is one of the most important natural shelters for birds in the Western Hemisphere.

A Visit to the Ancient Roots

A small island of floating mangroves and lowlands that is reputed to be the legendary Aztlan, birthplace and home city of the Aztec civilization. Mexcaltitlan holds a well-developed urban area with streets that became navigable canals during rainy season, a central plaza, a church and a museum. The name of this island means "in the house of the Moon" and is due to its round shape. This mythical place is considered the "cradle of Mexican identity"; the ancient Aztlan from where the Aztec people set out to trek to central Mexico, where they founded the city of Tenochtitlan.
