Puebla

Puebla, the capital of the state with same name, is located at the south of Mexico City and has been a strategic point of communication and commerce since it was founded 1531. The city blends the benefits of a modern city with good infrastructure, hotels, universities, major manufacturing, and a unique culture and history that includes five centuries of colonial presence.

Since 1987, the s historic center of Puebla was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Puebla has some of the best convention spaces in Mexico, such as the Puebla Convention Center conveniently located at the heart of the Historic Downtown, with 15,409 square feet of event space, an event hall that accommodates up to 3,500 people, and 6 meeting rooms that can hold 50 to 550 people. Recently inaugurated, Expo Center Puebla offers 430,500 sf and high tech facilities. The University Cultural Complex has an auditorium with space for up to 3,494 people, flexible meeting halls, and an outdoor esplanade that can accommodate 8,000 to 15,000 people.

Puebla has a great number of hotels perfect for hosting events and accommodating large groups of individuals, one of the I the Camino Real Puebla Angelopolis with 153 guestrooms, 5 meeting rooms for up to 400 individuals and 7 event spaces for up to 1,000 individuals. Puebla International Airport has direct flights to Cancun, Monterrey, Tijuana and Houston. Buses carry visitors from the Mexico City airport to Puebla in less than two hours.

Puebla: Baroque and Talavera

An enticing mix of old and new, universities, hip restaurants, boutique hotels and charming mercados await the Puebla City visitor. Puebla City Centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site and it is one of Mexico's best-preserved Spanish Colonial treasures. It contains some 2,600 designated historic buildings. As Mexican cities go, this is a very pedestrian-friendly city and easy to explore on foot. If you'd rather not walk, a red double-decker Turibus runs narrated tours departing every half hour. You'll find both a bus stop and a tourist information booth in the zocalo. Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception: built from 1575 – 1640, its towers (at 73.9 m; 244 f) are considered the highest in the country and even Latin America.

Folk Art and History

See a display of Puebla's traditional folk art and the kitchen where mole poblano was first prepared. The 17th-century Convento de Santa Rosa was originally devoted to Saint Agnes, but the nuns later changed their advocation in favor of the first saint of the Americas, Saint Rose of Lima. With the mid 19th century Reform Laws, all the church's property was nationalized, and under government auspices the building served as a military barracks, then a mental hospital, then a housing complex, before finally being converted into a cultural center and museum in the 1970s. The patio and the kitchen areas maintain a sense of grandeur from the days when this was a convent.

Handcrafted, Colorful Dreams

A plethora of delightful handicrafts made all over Puebla, from silver from Amozoc to amate paper from Pahuatlan, can be found in downtown markets and shops. It's only appropriate for one of Mexico's leading cultural centers to have a vast assortment of traditional handicrafts and treasured works of art. Of course there's Talavera(hand-painted ceramic), but on near equal repute is Puebla's carved onyx, (from Tecali de Herrera) painted papel amate (from Pahuatlan) embroidered and woven shawls, rugs, and dresses (from Hueyapan), silver jewelry (from the village of Amzoc), Christmas ornaments and glass ornaments from Chignahuapan. You'll find fine works and more at shops and artisan's workshops in downtown Puebla.

Cantona: Undiscovered Maginficence

This spectacular site leapt to the forefront of Mexican archaeology following an 18-month, $2 million restoration effort in the mid 1990's. Believed to be the largest urban center yet discovered in Mesoamerica, Cantona covers 12 square kilometres (five square miles) in a remote arid corner of northeast Puebla State. Cantona is divided into three urban units. It was first inhabited during the late classic period, reached its splendor by the epic-classic period and finally vanished in the early post classic era. It was actually one of the most urbanized cities of Pre-Hispanic Mexico.

Talavera: Clay Turns Into Art

Pots, plates, jars, religious figures, "azulejos" and other items made in Puebla have a very particular splendor thanks to european techniques and native designs. Soon after its foundation, Puebla was well known for its fine ceramics, especially for the style that would be called Talavera. This has been due to the abundance of quality clay in the region, drawing some of the best artisans. Between 1550 and 1570, Spanish potter from Talavera de la Reina in Spain came to Puebla to teach the locals European techniques of using the potter's wheel and tin glazing. These new methods were mixed with native designs to give rise to what became known as Poblano Talavera.

Sinning with Heavenly Flavours

Puebla's culinary tradition originates from the blending of two cultures; the Pre-Hispanic and Spanish, as well as French and Middle Eastern (Lebanese) influences. Here's a list of what you cannot miss during your gastronomic tour by Puebla. Mole Poblano: Proudly originated in Puebla and a beloved national dish, with more than 30 ingredients. Poblanos enjoy this dish year 'round and make several varieties. Served over turkey or chicken. Chiles En Nogada: Mexico's stuffed chile with walnut sauce par excellence and only served in summer months Traditional Sweets: A true pleasure for the palate, like tortitas de Santa Clara (Saint Claire cookies), camotes (flavored sweet potato), pepita candy (Caramel-covered Pumpkin Seed), jamoncillos (flavored pumpkin seed candy bars), Crystallized fruits, gaznates, and macarrones.

Capilla del Rosario, Beautiful Baroque Chapel

Marvel at the ornate beauty of the Rosary chapel of Santo Domingo church in Puebla. The severe grey quarrystone facade of Puebla's Templo de Santo Domingo gives no clue to the opulence within. Upon entering you'll find that the church is a masterpiece of baroque architecture and decoration. The grandiose altarpiece of the main altar, the spectacular onyx pulpit, and the sumptuous plasterwork and gold leaf contribute to the extravagant decor that characterizes Mexican baroque style. The Capilla del Rosario (Rosary Chapel), on the south side of the church's main altar, is the most magnificent aspect of this church's interior.

Biblioteca Palafoxiana: First Library of the Americas

The Biblioteca Palafoxiana is a great repository of learning in the heart of historic Puebla. While exploring the streets of Puebla's historic downtown, take some time to visit the oldest public library in the Americas. The Biblioteca Palafoxiana (Palafoxian Library) besides being an important historical and cultural treasure, is also an important repository of learning. The collection comprises over 40,000 books, the majority of them dating from before Mexico's independence, including many incunabula. The beautifully restored library is extraordinary in that the collection is conserved in its original location along with the original bookshelves. The Biblioteca Palafoxiana's namesake, Juan Palafox y Mendoza, was bishop of Puebla from 1640 to 1655, and served as viceroy of New Spain.

Echoes of Victory in Puebla

It was in The Forts of Loreto and Guadalupe where a small Mexican army defeated the French, and gave the world a reason to celebrate a Mexico glorious moment. Historically, Puebla's greatest moment came on May 5, 1862, when the invading French army was soundly defeated by a Mexican army one-half its size. Today the victory is celebrated throughout Mexico (and the U.S.) as Cinco de Mayo. The forts of Loreto and Guadalupe, where the battles took place, can be visited on the city's outskirts – now part of the Centro Civico 5 de Mayo. Cinco de Mayo is a date of great importance for the Mexican and Chicano communities.

Temples on the Top of Temples

Cholula is one of Mexico's oldest continuously inhabited cities. The largest pyramid ever built lies here along with an amazing collection of churches. Cholula was second only to the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan (modern Mexico City), possibly with a population of up to 100,000. The great city stood at the foot of what appears to be an earthen hill that is, in fact, the largest pyramid ever built, covering over 46 acres and spanning an incredible 405 meters on each side! In addition to this great construction dedicated to Quetzalcoatl, the city had a reported 365 temples. After taking the city during the Spanish Conquest, Hernan Cortes vowed that it would be rebuilt with a Christian church to replace each of the old pagan temples.

Museo Amparo, Mexican Art Through Time

Puebla's well-designed Museo Amparo displays Mexican art from the Pre-Hispanic period to modern times. One of the finest museums in Mexico, the Museo Amparo (Amparo Museum) in Puebla hosts temporary exhibitions and houses a large collection of Pre-Hispanic, colonial, modern, and contemporary Mexican art. The Amparo Museum is funded by the Amparo Foundation, a charitable organization which was founded by Manuel Espinosa Yglesias in memory of his late wife Amparo. It opened its doors in February 1991. The Amparo Museum is housed in two colonial buildings, one a mansion, the other a former hospital. These buildings were brilliantly adapted to display the impressive collection, and the displays, besides offering insight into the different cultures and periods of Mexico.
