Campeche

The city of Campehe is located in the state with the same name and it's part of the Yucatan Peninsula. Campeche city is a colonial seaside town that was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. The baroque, historical center is one of the most finely preserved in all the Americas and is home to Campeche Convention Center XXI, the state’s largest convention center, with 17,642 square feet of event space and capacity of up to 6,000 people .

The Hacienda Puerta Campeche and Hacienda Uayamon are also great places for events, with large facilities and gardens, perfect for banquets, conventions, and weddings. Campeche International Airport has direct flights to Mexico City, Cancun, and Merida.

Also in the state of Campeche is Ciudad del Carmen, also known as the oil city. Surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico and the huge, Terminos Lagoon, beyond the city you can find beautiful beaches, some of the best bird watching in Mexico, and great fishing. Luxury Hotels / Haciendas

Haciendas, which during the 19th century produced great riches, now offer the most demanding visitors an experience that links history to luxury and nature. At the end of the 18th century, Campeche was the wealthiest district in the Yucatan Peninsula, due to its commercial, shipping, and agricultural status. The Caste War (fought between the regions’ landed elites and rebellious Mayan Indians) diminished Campeche’s wealth, and only because of the popularity of henequen (a plant used to make rope and twine) did the region and its haciendas recover. Today, some of these haciendas have been turned into luxury hotels and others are open to the public.

Campeche, Flavors From Other Eras

The gastronomical pleasures of Campeche are like a journey to the past. With abundant land and marine resources, Campeche stands out due to a gastronomy that preserves Pre-Hispanic secrets such as herbs and fruits, and wisely links them to products brought from Europe, such as pork meat and its by-products. From Campeche's kitchen, you can try the panuchos, empanadas, tamales and cazon tacos. Visitors can also enjoy the delicious escabeche vine leaves and the x'catic chili, battered and stuffed with cazon. One of the favorite products in Campeche is shrimp, which can be prepared with coconut, plain, as paté, in cocktails and some hot dishes.

Fishing in Campeche

The Petenes Ecological Reserve is part of a coastal wetland corridor. Red, white and black mangroves create an ecosystem of great value due to its flora and fauna diversity. Here, visitors will find trees such as chechenes, mahogany, figs, chit palms and at least 400 plant species, many of them endemic. From its varied fauna stand out the pink flamingos, pelicans, river crocodiles, caimans, herons, white ibis, white winged ducks, Yucatan parrots, storks, sparrowhawks, howler monkeys, anteaters, four-eyed opossums and manatees. This is one of the best places for fishing, due to the richness of species that you will be able to find.

Submerge yourself in Campeche's History

The city of Campeche, the state’s capital, was the most important port in the Yucatan Peninsula during the Colonial Era. It was a prominent commercial port for the Viceroyship of New Spain, as Mexico was once known, making it a strategic point that France and England, mainly, used to take away the riches of the envied empire. That is the reason pirates and corsairs appeared in the region; they would attack and loot the Spanish ships. The waters of the Gulf of Mexico hide the remains of shipwrecks from different eras; today, they are a bastion of the country’s history and a unique experience for visitors.

Calakmul, an Awesome View of a Green Sea

Calakmul is not only an impressive archaeological site. It is the largest tropical ecological reserve in Mexico and the second largest natural lung on the continent. Occupying the state's eastern border with Quintana Roo State, this enormous reserve (covering 15% of Campeche's territory) is home to Mexico's largest tract of tropical jungle. It covers 723,185 hectares (1.8 million acres), and affords visitors one of the Mundo Maya's best eco-archaeological opportunities.The reserve is located 360 km south and east of Campeche City over Highways 261/186.

Edzna, the City of the Itzas

"The house of the wise water men" is the meaning of Edzna, one of the most important archaeological sites of the Mayan World. For a glimpse of one of the Yucatan's most important archaeological sites, head east from Campeche City 60 km to Edzna. The city flourished during the Classic period, and was a contemporary of Palenque. By 650 A.D. there is evidence the city was inhabited by as many as 70,000 Maya. A great acropolis, its wealth of buildings and styles give a good idea of the enormous political, economic and religious power of the city.

Among Pirates and Swamps at Ciudad del Carmen

Surrounded by the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Terminos Lagoon, the island where Ciudad del Carmen sits, offers an exotic fusion of pirate stories, beautiful colonial buildings and natural landscapes of great richness. During the colonial period, it was a strategic port for pirates since it was the perfect spot to attack ships and neighboring cities. On July 16, 1718, the day of the Carmen Virgin, the Spaniards set the island in order and founded the city. Today, the island is connected to the mainland by two bridges, one of them is the country's longest (two miles), and it is considered a masterpiece of Mexican engineering.

Campeche, Fortified Treasure

Campeche was terrorized by French, Dutch and English pirates. It became the principal colonial port in the Yucatan Peninsula, thanks to its formidable defense system. As was done in Cartagena, Colombia, a thick stone wall shaped like a hexagon stretched some 2.5 km surrounding the city. Eight strategically-placed fortresses made the city impregnable. Although much of the wall is gone today (replaced by a highway surrounding the city), seven of the eight original bulwarks (baluartes) are still in place. (The east and west walls are virtually intact.) All the bulwarks are of great interest, with museums, galleries, tropical gardens, auditoriums, and folk art exhibits.

The Prodigious Hands From Campeche

Shopping in Campeche is a pleasure. The hands of craftsmen from this state produce comfortable hammocks, delicate creations made of bull bones, jipi hats and much more. Through its beautiful colonial cities and its traditions, gastronomy and handcrafts, Campeche stands out due to a style that combines the tropical environment with elegance. Just as in the rest of the Yucatan Peninsula, hammocks in Campeche are an essential item for relaxing. Made of natural o synthetic fibers, this way of taking a siesta is refreshing and versatile, ideal for the high temperature of the Peninsula. The town of Calkini is one of the main hammock producers in the state.

Palizada: The Gift of the Riverside Peacefulness

Time makes a pause, walks slowly among small colorful houses and meanders on the Palizada River which converges in the Terminos Lagoon. It then moves towards the downtown portals, where it picks a spot to savor, slowly and placidly, a delicious fried fish, while the intense colors of the sunset make their appearance to reflect off the rivers' waves. That is how Palizada is, a Magic Town from Campeche, whose name comes from the cutting of precious woods that took place there during a long time to export them to Europe, particularly the logwood, which today is used to create beautiful art objects. In Palizada, one needs to stop looking at the watch and open the senses.

Chenes, in the Itzamna Jaws

The elegance defined by the Chenes architectural style reveals a great artistic sensibility from the Mayans. Follow this surprising route on eastern Campeche. The Chenes Route is one of the most fascinating tours in Campeche. It allows visitors to admire the remains of splendid Mayan cities that at one point were important political centers and reached populations of up to 10,000 inhabitants. Among the aromas and sounds of the rainforest, details along walls and pyramids start revealing to visitors, soberly adorned with masks that represent the jaws of Itzamna, the sun god of the Mayans.

Balamku, a Pre-Hispanic Journey

The Balamku friezes, well kept by Campeche's jungle, take us into the mysterious Mayan view of the world. Located on the Escarcega-Chetumal highway, in the municipality of Hopelchen, Campeche, this Mayan city that covers just one square kilometer is famous for being the home of the “universe frieze”, an archeological piece made of polychrome stucco, unique in the area, and with engravings of stylized and alternating jaguars, serpents and a saurian. This impressive structure includes four scenes that make reference to the universe's order, and opposing and complementary aspects of the underworld. Each representation shows an animal with the head turned backwards.
