A visit to Tepoztlán’s different barrios (neighborhoods) and surrounding villages is a great way to discover what makes the place tick; a tour around the colonial buildings, colorful neighborhoods and natural parks reveals the strong traditions and love of nature of the inhabitants of this central Mexican town.
At the Xochitla ecological reserve – with its restaurant, lodging, sports facilities, and even a small train – children can learn about nature conservation and protection with environmental workshops given by people from neighboring villages.
In Tepoztlán you can also visit villages which still retain their ancient traditions; some aquifers, such as the Agua Hedionda water park in Cuautla, are believed to have curative powers.
Yautepec and Tlayacapan, towns about 10 miles from Tepoztlán, are also proud of their Dominican and Franciscan architectural icons and the towns’ markets offer traditional cuisine with regional delicacies such as Pambazos (sandwiches with special filling) and the Cecina de Yecapixtla (thin cuts of beef).
