For traditional folk entertainment, the Mérida en Domingo Sunday program organized by the City of Mérida presents outdoor performances at various places around the city center. These include the traditional Yucatecan Vaquería, which originated in the old henequen haciendas. Women working on these plantations used to entertain hacienda owners and their guests by dancing to the beat of Mayan songs combined with Spanish music — in honor of the master or owner of the hacienda.
