About five miles from Puerto Escondido, fishing enthusiasts can find sailfish, tuna, red snapper, and marlin. In November, during the International Sailfish Tournament, the main bay is filled with sports fishermen hoping for a prize catch.
The tournament has an attractive program of related activities, many for children, as well as the Miss Sailfish beauty pageant. These are all accompanied by wonderful local musical groups and the fabulous Oaxaca cuisine.
Another fishing season is in February when groups of tourists flock to the lagoon to take advantage of the conditions before the dam is opened or to the La Punta beach to practice their technique with a spear or harpoon.
Fishing in Puerto Escondido is also a great place for novices. There are many local experts who are more than happy to share their knowledge and take tourists out on their boats to have fun — and lunch, too.
