In 1954, the American Leroy H. Dorsey was behind organizing the first marlin fishing competition in Manzanillo.
Inspired by the success of the 1957 tournament, when 336 specimens were caught, he set about turning it into an international event. Since then, this port has been known as the Sailfish Capital of the World.
There is, however, also outstanding sport fishing for dorado, marlin, yellowfin tuna, bluefin tuna, mackerel tuna, sierra, and barracuda.
On the beaches of Barra de Navidad and Melaque, in the iconic Navidad Bay near Manzanillo, you can try another less competitive type of fishing.
In February and November, Barra de Navidad becomes the headquarters for major international fishing tournaments, where hundreds of competitors and fans from around the world watch amazing specimens of sailfish, marlin, dorado, and tuna being caught.
Melaque is different. Here, you can fish in the company of locals, who will give you tips on the best places to cast your bait.
The best fishing months are February, May, June, July, and November.
