These microorganisms give off light as a defense in response to the sudden movements of  boats, providing awestruck visitors a unique display of fluorescent magic.

In Mazunte, guided walks lead visitors through dense mangroves surrounding lagoon banks. Here, they can become acquainted with an immense diversity of shellfish and microorganisms, that, when rains cause the lagoon and ocean to meet, serve as food for dolphins, turtles, and a wide variety of fish.
