There are many places to camp around Durango city.
The El Saltito waterfall is a natural wonder southeast of the city, 33 miles from the town of Nombre de Dios. It offers camping in superb mountain scenery. The waterfall has a 39 foot drop and is surrounded by giant juniper trees. On the weekends it attracts scores of tourists.
The enigmatic Zona del Silencio, or Silent Area, is a region located between the states of Chihuahua, Durango and Coahuila. It is one of the most popular spots among more experienced campers and also among those who are curious about the legends of missing aircraft and UFO sightings. Some say that all radio signals are cut in this desert area and that electrical apparatus and petrol engines do not work there.
This puzzling area is situated in the desert of Mapimí, four hours from the city of Durango. It was the first protected natural area of Mexico, but despite this status you can obtain special permission to camp here. Many people do just that to get the chance of experiencing weird phenomena.
