The town of Tepoztlán boasts the archeological remains of El Tepozteco, a pre-Hispanic religious site at the summit of a mountain 6500 feet above sea level and 2000 feet above the town with spectacular views onto the horizon.
This archeological site – used as a place to worship the god Ometochtli-Tepuztécatl in pre-Hispanic times – was built in the Late Post-Classic period, probably when the town of Tepoztlán had already been conquered by the Mexica.
Archeologists confirm that this pyramid was built here because the mountains had a special religious meaning for the inhabitants. This is reflected in its shape; it has a unique 2-level structure and a lower rectangular platform reached by 4 sets of steps, which would previously have been decorated with wood carvings.
