All kinds of Mayan archeology and remains can be found around the city; in the beautiful archeological zone in Campeche, Edzná, for example, some 40 miles southeast from the city, has the vestiges of Campeche pyramids, Mayan temples, palaces, and monumental buildings are surrounded by a pre-Hispanic system of water channels.
Alternatively, you can travel 85 miles from Campeche to Santa Rosa Xtampak where you’ll be able to appreciate a series of buildings boasting unique Chenes and Puuc Mayan architectural styles.
The ancient Campeche Mayan cities of Hochob and Dzibilnocac – famous for their decorative façades and towers, respectively – are both in the outskirts of the city of Campeche.
These sites confirm the archeological importance of the state of Campeche, with such important remains as Calakmul found just a little further away from the state capital.
