Mazatlan inhabitants feel justly proud of the cobbled streets of their 19th century historic city center, but only four miles away, luxurious beachfront hotels show another side to the town. Golf courses, restaurants offering international cuisine and the trendiest clubs in the city… you have entered the Zona Dorada (Golden Zone).
If you want to play in the sand and surf, you’ve got Playa Camaron, Gaviotas, Sabalo, Brujas and Cerritos to choose from, not to mention the beaches on nearby Stone, Deer, Goat and Bird Islands. Playa Gaviotas (Seagulls beach), the liveliest of them all, means guaranteed action. You can rent boogie boards, windsurfers, kayaks or try your hand at parasailing.
If you‘re looking for the best place to party, there’s no need to cross the city. When the sun goes down, Fiesta Land, a striking Moorish structure on Playa Sabalo, houses a variety of nightclubs and eateries.
At the north end of the Zona Dorada, Marina Mazatlan is home to the yachting crowd as well as several hotels, condos and a 27-hole golf course. Further north of the marina, new and luxurious resorts offer their guests a serendipitous blend of golden beach, swaying palms, fabulous pools, grand gardens and spas that excel in exotic pampering treatments. How about a four-hand massage or a chocolate wrap?
