Influenced by its prehispanic and colonial past, Malinalco, in the State of Mexico, is a suburban oasis of colourful markets, cobbled streets, chapels and small charming hotels. Visit the Ex Convento del Divino Salvador, a former convent that boasts paintings from the mid-15th Century. Malinalco’s rich plant life includes fruits such as white sapotes, feljoas and plums, as well as ferns, jacarandas and orchids. In the local markets you will find pink-centred guavas, blue mushrooms, large radishes and all kinds of flowers.

If you visit Malinalco in August, the Fiestas del Divino Salvador, where flip-flops, firecrackers and fireworks are the order of the day, are not to be missed. During Holy Week, hundreds of religious followers walk through the town's streets dressed as Roman soldiers, playing war rhythms on trumpets, drums and flutes. Admire the paintings in the ex-convent's lower cloister, one of the most valuable examples of "New Spanish" mural paintings. You can't leave without climbing up to the archaeological zone, trying the delicious trout or visiting the Museo Luis Mario Schneider.

Don't miss out on the delicious quesadillas made from blue maize tortillas, dried and salted "cecina", and chorizo tacos, served with chips and onions. If you are looking for gourmet food, Malinalco has a number of different options such as signature cuisine, international and traditional cooking. We recommend the "pulpo a la gallega" (Galician-style octopus), and artichoke with Dijon mustard vinaigrette.
