Sombrerete, Zacatecas

When in 1555 a group of Spaniards headed by Juan de Tolosa came across a silver deposit and decided to set up camp there, they began to write the history of one of the most picturesque and tradition-rich towns in all of New Spain. Along with friar Jeronimo de Mendoza, it was they who exclaimed, upon seeing a nearby hill, 'look, it resembles our sombreros.' And that's how the recently-founded town came to be named Sombrerete.
