When on the Route of the Maya Charm, you will discover a large number of activities perfect for couples, families or just for the fun of taking with you a great memory.
Hidden among the dense rain forest stands the ancient city of Coba. In these Mayan ruins you will find the tallest pyramid in the neighboring state of Quintana Roo, the Nohoch Muul temple, from where you will enjoy one of the most beautiful views in the area. Go walking or biking, along these remains which are also home to an authentic Mayan community that has managed to be self-sufficient taking advantage of the resources offered by the system of lakes.
You should also visit the Balamkanche Caves. These famous caves were discovered by accident by a tourist guide in 1959 and today are one of the natural attractions near Valladolid. At the center of its spacious rooms covered by stalactites and stalagmites you will see a structure attached to the floor resembling the trunk of a ceiba tree. It is believed that the place was used by the Maya for their ancient rituals, because pottery, shells and pieces of jade were found here.
For lunch, be sure to go to the Kinich restaurant, outside Tulum. Its name in the Maya language means “smiling sun”. It offers a varied menu of traditional dishes: entrees such as the papadzules, the famous Valladolid sausage and chaya patties, a plant similar to spinach, with ball cheese. The traditional and very Yucatecan lime soup could not be absent; and neither could the venison dzic, consisting of a haunch of venison cooked underground, accompanied by a delicious salpicon (diced tomatoes onions, green and red peppers, all marinated together). The well-known cochinita pibil also is part of the menu, as well as the black filling, with chicken cooked in this stew; once the visual resistance is broken because of its intense black color, it becomes a favorite of all those who try it. The menu is complemented by typical desserts from Yucatan: the papaya sweet, which is prepared when this fruit is still green in order to achieve a delicious syrup preserve.
