The first six months of the year have just gone by, and Tlaxcala seems immersed in a winter environment; in the municipalities of Nanacamilpa and Españita nobody has placed a series of lights to decorate the oyamel trees, why then, do they shine? You just need to step a little closer to see that the light comes from fireflies which, during the months of June, July and August, take over this natural space in Tlaxcala, and, just as they do every year, come here to mate, offering visitors a natural spectacle that will leave you breathless.
The adventure begins the moment you go deep into the thick forest of conifer trees. Forget you cell phone and any other distraction, you will lose all communication with the outside world and will be sitting there, in the middle of the forest, enjoying the afternoon and anxiously waiting for the night to fall and the forest to light up creating a marvelous postcard with a spectacle of naturally synchronized lights.
It is amazing to think that this, which seems a winter scene, illuminated as any area would be during Christmas, is due to living beings, fireflies, who are in an area of over 200 hectares, a humid and wooded area perfect for mating, due to the conditions of the ground, larvae have a plentiful source of food. In the evenings, especially during the month of July, you can see how the female fireflies light up to attract the males flying above, searching to mate and reproduce. That’s when the females lay the fertilized eggs on the bark of trees.
Walking along the trails of a forest lighted only by the sky covered with stars and the luminescence of fireflies, where you will only be able to hear the soft murmur of the wind and the animals, shall be an experience you will never forget.
Where to stay?
In the area known as the Fireflies Sanctuary, there are three eco-hotels which will add a more natural touch to your experience. The Piedra Canteada Eco-Hotel has eight cabins scattered among 600 hectares of forest, which will allow you to be in contact with nature. Taste traditional dishes prepared with products from the region. You can also go camping, mountain biking and hiking.
In the Santa Clara Forest Villas you will be able to enjoy its cabins and/or camping areas, while you enjoy the night around a campfire in the middle of a beautiful forest surrounded by pines and oyameles. The cabins of the Laguna Azul eco-hotel are located next to the San Felipe-Hidalgo community, where you will be able to enjoy a stay with a spectacular view of the lagoon.
