The Sierra de Organos (Organs Mountain Range) rises proudly from the surrounding ground, a mountainous chain of rock that stands out in unique shapes from the flat-lying landscape around it. Over the centuries, wind erosion has molded curious shapes and natural sculptures that resemble the pipes of an ancient church organ; people have given the different rocks names such as: monks, apache faces, whale, eagle, snake head, and so on. The rocks that, by popular accounts, resemble cathedrals, towers, castles and even monks, on average measure 200 feet in height, the tallest of them towering a colossal 265 feet. This mountain range, which belongs to the Western Sierra Madre, has been the set for several Mexican and international films, such as Navarone Canyons (starring Anthony Queen and Gregory Peck), and El Cavernicola, starring former Beatle, Ringo Starr.
If you walk without making a sound, you'll stand a good chance of spotting rabbits, jackrabbits, quails, turkeys, mountain lions, coyotes, whitetail deer, roadrunners and other unusual species. When it comes to flora, expect to find around 400 plant species including pine trees, cassavas, cacti, acacias, cedars and oaks. This breathtaking and otherworldly landscape, coupled with the rocks' striking natural composition, make it the perfect place for eco-tourism and adventure sports such as hiking, mountain climbing and mountain biking. You'll be hard pushed to find a more stunning backdrop to any of these activities than the Sierra de Organos.
The Sierra de Organos Natural Park is a great option if you fancy camping in the middle of the forest under the stars; the area has special camping grounds fitted with cooking grills, so you'll be able to self-cater. It is recommended to wear light clothing during the day, since the weather is predominantly hot, and warm clothing at night when the temperature drops considerably. If you prefer not to compromise on comfort, you can spend the night at one of the on-site cabins, which are each equipped with a kitchenette, living room, two bedrooms and a bathroom.
