The capital of Veracruz offers a variety of options for those who wish to tread on grass instead of concrete; ecological parks, botanical gardens and natural reserves, all of which offer the possibility to relax within a natural environment. Xalapa, a city which continues to grow and have more inhabitants, has a number of green areas offering a great option for those who want to get away from the noise of the city and become immersed in a natural environment. The city’s uneven ground and humid climate are ideal for lush vegetation, as the one kept at the botanical garden located on the outskirts of Xalapa, or at the ecological parks at its center.
The Francisco Javier Clavijero Botanical Garden is a large green area housing more than 700 species of plants typical to the region. A coffee plantation has also sprung up here. Since 1975, the botanical garden is devoted to the study, protection and spreading of the fauna found in Xalapa and its surrounding areas. To walk along its trails, admire all kinds to plant species and exotic flowers and hear chirping birds is a most pleasant experience for the visitor.
On the other hand, the quintessential family park is the Paseo de los Lagos, located just below the Juarez Park. It consists of three artificial lakes with a path going around them, along which walk families, lovers and sportsmen (and the occasional single person). The Los Lagos Cultural Center is also located in the park, where sports and cultural events are organized, and the visitor will find galleries and yoga and dance workshops, as well as other activities. The Tecajetes Park is an actual paradise in the midst of the city’s concrete. Located in a natural hollow, it contains numerous fountains, goldfish ponds, bridges, plants which grow in the Fog Forest and countless spots where the visitor is able to enjoy the silence. The Parque de los Berros is another option, it is the largest and oldest of the city’s parks; its kiosk, green areas, playgrounds, food stalls, a small train which runs through the park and the fairs which are frequently put up in it, have turned it into an excellent option to spend the day with the whole family.
