Cozumel is another breathtaking destination in the route of the maya charm, close to Cancun and the Riviera Maya. It is a typical Caribbean island, with its amazingly clear, turquoise colored ocean, and gigantic cruise ships always docked at the pier.
The Arrecifes National Park in Cozumel is one of the best diving spots in the Caribbean. This is due to the transparency of its waters as it houses the second largest coral reef in the world.
There are about 25 reefs, with a variety of corals, large sponges, calcareous algae, in addition to the abundant marine wildlife, including stingrays, moray eels, barracudas, turtles and groupers. You can contact one of the many diving operators offering tours for all ages and skills. You can also go sports fishing, as golden fish, sailfish and swordfish abound.
It was in 1961 when the famous French oceanographer Jacques Cousteau declared Cozumel as one of the most spectacular dive sites, thus unwittingly becoming the best publicist for the island. Thus began the international fame of this destination. Since then, people from all over the planet come to discover firsthand the wonders of this aquatic ecosystem.
This place offers a wide selection of restaurants, cafes, boutiques and colorful shops offering souvenirs and Mayan crafts. If you stroll along the boardwalk, in addition to a peaceful stroll, you will be able to admire many sculptures and monuments. In spite of being a very busy tourist resort, Cozumel does not give up the quiet and provincial air that attracts visitors.
In Cozumel, the Maya built the sanctuary to the goddess Ixchel, to which pilgrims came from different regions of the Yucatan Peninsula, and it also functioned as a trading center. San Gervasio, as this sanctuary was later named, is the largest and most important archaeological site in Cozumel, and it is also a must see place for anyone arriving at the island, who wants to learn about the life of the ancient islanders.
You can get to Cozumel through its international airport or from Quintana Roo, on the ferry going from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel.
