Coasts of Puerto Peñasco, summing 110 kilometers in length, are an important refuge of sea life. Its calm waters house a large variety of species of flora and fauna, for which these have been declared as an ecological reserve in order to preserve the aquatic diversity that, nowadays, is endangered. In the beaches El Mirador, La Cholla, Las Conchas, Playa de Oro and Playa Bonita, besides of natural reserves such as Estero Morua (Morua Estuary), it is possible to find tiny crabs, colorful sea shells, snails and sea cucumbers under the rocks or dragged by the waves, as well as pistol shrimps, anemone, sea stars and other animals.
CET-MAR (Sea Technological Studies Center) aquarium allows knowing closely the rich marine biodiversity of the region; calamari, oysters, sting rays, sea horses, fish and other creatures live in their huge fish tanks. The aquarium has an interactive section, in which it is possible to pet and feed seals and turtles (food is sold in the store at a very accessible price), as well as touching sea stars, urchins and cucumbers. Likewise, the facility has a turtles farm where newly born specimens of loggerhead turtle are kept.
CET-MAR is located in the in the beach Las Conchas, next to the sea; its facilities open from Monday to Friday from 10 am to 2:30 pm and Satuday and Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm. The cost of the ticket is very accessible. It is an excellent option to spend a day in company of the family and –not less important– to become aware and learn about the importance to preserve the marine ecosystems.
